Re: [sp] Blair 1523Sonic also produced an unreleased album for The Field Trip which was pretty good. I've got a copy on cassette but, unfortunately, it's over the other side of the world somewhere in a box in my parent's loft! I might see if any of my mate's back home have a copy that they can send to me.

I thought the Bop-a-Sonic stuff was just released on the label without Sonic's musical input. Sacred Miracle Cave's stuff had already come out on Bomp and all Sonic did was reverse the A and B sides and reissue it in a different sleeve. Some of their stuff was pretty good although the vocals were slightly operatic for some - the Bop-a-Sonic single and another called something like Motor Takes To Sink (that might just have been a track on it) were both excellent. I have a feeling singer Betsy is among this mailing list - am I right? I didn't care for the Silver Chapter stuff. I saw both The Field Trip and Beautiful Happiness supporting Spectrum at gigs and they were both very good - the BH 12"s had some good songs, one called This Season's Love was brilliant. Field Trip sounded like nasty blokes though - one of them even managed to miss the flight to the US for a Spectrum tour because he didn't get out of bed or something so they were a musician down!

Sonic also had his hands on a few other things in the (mainly) early 90's

  The European Sons lp

  A coupla Beautiful Happiness 12"s

Two Field Trip singles (on one he played hammond and feedback--different from their split 7" on Sympathy, btw)

David J lp "Urban Urbane" (played feedback on this one)

Jazz Butcher lp "Fishcoteque" (played feedback on this one)

The Bop-a-Sonic releases - Sacred Miracle Cave 12" and Silver Chapter 12"

  Some La Secta releases

  Anything else?

Anyone care to have a go at the more recent stuff as its hard to keep track anymore..?

  Cheers

  James

Its not a bad record. Definitely worth picking up if you see it. Another little interesting fact about it is that it was recorded at EMS studios by Robin Wood. This is the same guy and company that is currently building the EMS Synthi A and VCS3.

can someone tell even more about a band called Blair 1523. "from strong pop songwriting to a penchant for extended freakout jams."

they have only one release and this seems to happend with a great help of Sonic Boom. this is copy&paste from allmusic.com:

It's a fun and accurate album title, Beautiful Debris, collecting the quite wonderful and indeed more often than not sweetly beautiful output of Blair 1523. The group only released an EP in its lifetime on a small English label; thankfully Spacemen 3/Spectrum mainman Sonic Boom heard it and was able to arrange for the release of Debris some time later. Compiling both the EP and unreleased tracks, it makes a solid case for Blair 1523 as underrated modern psych gods, mixing a fun kick-up-your-heels rave-up sense. Lead singer Alan Duke has a fairly understated voice, but no more so than, say, Ian Brown and Tim Burgess, and unlike those others, Duke avoids whine in favor of pleasant wistfulness.
